China will play prominently at the 62nd Locarno Film Festival as protagonist of its Open Doors co-production mart.
Twelve projects from mainland China, but also from Hong Kong and Taiwan, will participate in an extensive workshop during the well-attended Swiss fest, aiming to enable them to connect with potential European partners.
Locarno artistic topper Frederic Maire enthused about Open Doors' choice of Chinese cinema this year as being a "great economic and cultural opportunity."
Open Doors director Vincenzo Bugno called China's production scene a "deeply diversified" universe comprising high-profile pics with name directors, but also a multitude of lesser known or still undiscovered moviemakers, which could “contribute to enriching world cinema thanks also to international co-productions."
The Swiss government will provide two grants of 50,000 Swiss Francs ($43,000) each — one for development and one for production — while France's Centre National de la Cinematographie is supporting a first Chinese feature with Euros 7,000 ($9,000) in development coin.
